DAYTONA 500 CHANGES NASCAR Makes Changes As we left last season there was speculation that NASCAR would make changes to the car for the Daytona 500 to stop the 2 car tandem draft. The changes have been announced. NASCAR issued a new techinal bulletine to all teams. 1. The radiator size has been made smaller, downsizing from the traditional 5 gallon radiator to a (not to exceed) 2 gallons. In addition the over - flow tank cannot be any larger than 1 gallon which is half the size smaller. Reason: To make the radiator run less efficient so that ity will force cars to run in open air to keep water temperatures down. I think we will see some difference but not a huge diffeence because most of the teams have figured this out.
2. The grille opening has been moved to the bumper fascia area. Reason: Because when they get tucked up behind another car, they will kill all the air going to the engine to keep it cool. I think this will make a huge impact. 3. NASCAR has mandated softer springs 4. A smaller rear spoiler 5. The restrictor plate size is 29/32ths of an inch which is 1/64th of an inch larger than the plate used in the 2011. Reason: All being done to stop the tandem drafting but hopfully making it more exciting for the fans. |
